MDA’s ALS Division introduces you to 31 people  - one each day for the month of May - who are living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

This series was inspired by Augie Nieto, ALS Division Co-Chairperson, who says that since his ALS diagnosis, instead of striving for success, his goal each day is to be significant.

In their own words, otherwise “ordinary” people describe the impact of living with a progressive, incurable and deadly disease. But their stories also tell how ALS has brought new significance to their lives in ways that you might not expect.

ALS can become anyone’s life story. Please join MDA’s world-leading effort to stop it.

Hobbies/Interests:  Church, family, friends.

Favorite quote:  ‘Never give up on life. God will get you there.”

Date of ALS diagnosis:  October 2007

Tell us about your life before ALS:   Before ALS, my life was family and work. I was always on the go. It was all about loving life and the people in my life.

Tell us about your life with ALS:  Since my ALS diagnosis, I still try to keep going. I volunteer for my son’s elementary school to pass the time. I miss working and getting out as much as I used to.

Do you have a “life motto” or profound words to live by? “God never puts more on you than you can hold.”

Has there been an “aha!” moment or a specific turn of events that has helped you live with ALS? I am a third-generation family with ALS. ALS is a battle that has made me talk and enjoy laughing with people. I appreciate the people in my life now more than ever.

Tell us how ALS has brought new significance to any aspect of your life — family, attitude, hobbies/passions, career, etc.: ALS is not a thing that we in my family don’t know about. We hope and pray that one day there is a cure. My friends and family have helped me live with this disease.

Is there anything else about you and/or ALS that you want to share with people who read your story? ALS is a battle, but we can defeat this. One day there will be a cure if it is God’s will.
