MDA’s ALS Division introduces you to 31 people  - one each day for the month of May - who are living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

This series was inspired by Augie Nieto, ALS Division Co-Chairperson, who says that since his ALS diagnosis, instead of striving for success, his goal each day is to be significant.

In their own words, otherwise “ordinary” people describe the impact of living with a progressive, incurable and deadly disease. But their stories also tell how ALS has brought new significance to their lives in ways that you might not expect.

ALS can become anyone’s life story. Please join MDA’s world-leading effort to stop it.

Favorite quote: “Life shrinks or expands according to one’s courage.” – Anais Nin

Date of ALS diagnosis: February 2006

Tell us about your life before ALS: Before my diagnosis, I was just getting back into my love of playing tennis. I enjoyed being part of my daughters’ activities during school (volunteering in the classrooms) and after school (ballet, horseback, play dates). My husband and girls were happy doing anything; just being together.

Tell us about your life with ALS: After my diagnosis, it wasn’t long before I gave up tennis. I continue to be involved in my daughters’ school and extracurricular activities. Though I am not physically present, I insist on their sharing their experiences with me. This may seem simple, but it is the simple that matters. My husband and girls are still happy doing anything. Again, it is ‘simple’ that matters.

Do you have a “life motto” or profound words to live by? Never stop trying. Keep your friends close…they are gifts.

Tell us how ALS has brought new significance to any aspect of your life — family, attitude, hobbies/passions, career, etc.: My condition has rewarded me, and those who are close to me, with accepting the true value of patience, kindness and generosity.
