MDA Can Help
Clinics
MDA maintains 230 hospital-affiliated clinics and
30 MDA/ALS Centers that offer diagnostic and follow-up care;
referrals to physical, occupational, speech and respiratory
therapists; consultations and prescriptions for wheelchairs
and other orthopedic equipment; flu shots; training on basic
daily care techniques; and more.
MDA/ALS Centers
These 30 centers across the country operate by a team approach, allowing
patient and caregiver to see all specialists in one visit.
They’re directed by a leading ALS specialist who’s also
conducting research on ALS and has the latest information
on treatments.
Research
MDA’s ALS
Division funds a broad range of research projects by
top ALS specialists worldwide. MDA also keeps you up-to-date
on ongoing clinical trials of new drugs and treatments,
and lets you know how to get information about participation.
Support Groups
Patients, caregivers and other family
members can meet and talk with those who’ve been there.
People with ALS and professional facilitators share practical
advice and emotional support.
Equipment
MDA assists with purchase and repair
of wheelchairs and leg braces. MDA also helps those it serves purchase communication devices. Most MDA offices operate loan closets
of orthopedic and hospital equipment. They can also suggest
local vendors.
Information
Through its ALS Web site (www.als-mda.org),
publications, seminars and other means, MDA keeps those
with ALS and their caregivers informed about research, medical
issues and more. Follow the link for a list of MDA
publications.
